The Weakerthans are proud Canadians:: May 2009
When I ask drummer Jason Tait how The Weakerthans feel about being a distinctly Canadian band, he laughs. “Well, it's not like we have a choice in the matter, anyway!”

The Born Ruffians: Born to be great:: May 2009
Being in an up and coming Canadian band in Canada is one thing; being in one that’s rising steadily in the U.K. is another. Born Ruffians, the three-piece from Toronto, Ontario has been gaining steady attention from the island’s music lovers and television watchers alike for two years now, and it looks like it won’t be stopping any time in the near future.

Star Lights Shine Bright:: March 2009
"Iiiiiiiiiiiice. Iiiiiiiiiiiiiice." A chorus of voices elongate throughout the swelling crowd. There are too many headbands to count; oodles of them say LIGHTS, some even glow.

Tales from the City: A Mobile Evolution:: January 2009
On April 18, 2006, a group of Montreal rockers rejoiced as their debut album, Tomorrow Starts Today, was released under Universal Music Canada. With hits like "Out of My Head" and "Montreal Calling," the seemingly overnight success provided two potential outcomes. Mobile would either join the ranks of other "one album wonders" or become part of a larger legacy of Canadian music.

Reel Big Fish are Sexy Chicken Fingers:: January 2009
While other ska bands went electronic or pop (we all know what happened to Gwen Stefani), they stuck to their roots. And their latest packed show in Toronto, fresh off the Warped Tour, is living proof that being yourself pays.

After two month of being the openers for Paramore’s summer tour, ambient-indie band Paper Route finally gets to return home to Nashville, Tennessee. With two EPs released under their own label, and a full length album coming out under Universal Motown, Paper Route has a lot to be happy about. In between selling their merch, drummer Gavin McDonald and singer/sampler J.T. Daly talks to Ronak Ghorbani about their tour experiences and future plans.

Nxne Day 3: Bitchin' Hair and Cellos:: July 2008
The rain has finally stopped but that doesn’t mean the sounds of Much Music prepping for their annual Much Music Awards has ceased. I was running late and the crowds gathering around the barrier would not part. It's shocking to see parents lined up for their kids at 9 p.m. for a show that doesn't start until tomorrow night.

Nxne Day 2: Leaky Roofs and Mosh Pits Galore:: July 2008
Although the hearing in my right ear is almost completely gone due to the show at the Kathedral Thursday night, I decided to venture onwards on my quest to find some good music. So I travelled down to Dundas Square to check out a free concert.

Nxne Day 1: Scrabble and Fire Alarms:: July 2008
After waiting for a fire alarm drill to finish up and being oh- so- late for meeting up with one of my friends; it’s great to finally kick off North By North East- Mutedmag.com style. This nifty little Toronto music festival is a great way to support the Canadian music scene and discover bands you’ve probably never heard of before.

Chiodos Call Toronto their First Canadian Home :: May 2008
Dressed in a tight, tailored suit, front-man Craig Owens swaggers about the stage draping his arm at his waist with all the bravado of an ageing rock-star. He stands atop a monitor on the front of the stage, up-lit by the red floods; arms outstretched, grinning hellishly at the crowd beneath.
